Protests, Agricultural Committee, and New Subscription to WWIND!
Things are ramping up all over the province and in your local communities! Time to get active.
Agricultural Committee NC
North Cowichan is looking for new volunteers for its Agricultural Committee. These committees hold a lot of power, as we see with the environmental committee. Often motions are put forward to direct a committee to look over a proposal or plan. All voices must be heard in these committees, and often they are not diverse. And as we see a global war on farming currently happening, it is even more important that this committee be filled with folks who actually work the land and water. Think about throwing your hat in the ring! NC has even more farmland than the CVRD! Protect our food security: https://www.northcowichan.ca/municipal-hall/mayor-council/boards-committees/volunteering-recruitment
WWIND has written many articles on this topic such as https://wwind.ca/environmental-concerns-clash-with-agricultural-realities/
And here we see an incredibly sad story of a family who has been dealing with the same issues our farmers are here: (water rights, water applications, river excuses, labour costs, and red tape)
A reminder of the protest outside the CVRD building on the 28th, 12:30 (speakers at 1:30) on their ridiculous, out-of-control tax hike taking 9.3 million dollars over 2023 from taxpayers’ pockets. This affects everyone who pays CVRD taxes, including North Cowichan residents who pay 1/3 of line 100 on the CVRD budget, so if they increase taxes, it increases in all areas that pay a portion of their taxes to the CVRD.
Subscription to WWIND
After many requests for a subscription button, we have now added one! Did you know that Westward Independent also puts out many more articles, almost daily, that are not seen in the hard-copy paper? You can check out ‘Recent Articles’ at wwind.ca, or get a digest sent to your email weekly by subscribing here: https://wwind.ca/subscribe/
We also opened a Twitter/X page where articles, and local video
COAP and its members fought hard against North Cowichan’s essential gas ban this year, while being told it was not a “ban” when it was the first step towards one by accelerating the stop code 6 years ahead of the Province. The same folks who approached North Cowichan, with debunked studies to claim that natural gas causes children to have asthma, have recently approached the CVRD. COAP has a whole list of videos on our Utube showing a strong community rejection of their plan as seen here:
And here:
Well how many people do you know switched to Natural Gas furnaces and hot water tanks to save some money, and followed the previous provincial push towards NG? Looks like BC will now not only include their step code regulations but will force owners with end-of-life furnaces and hot water tanks to succumb to the new rules: https://www.nationalobserver.com/2024/02/21/news/furnaces-are-crosshairs-fight-over-gas
COAP has so many new initiatives in the works! Exciting year ahead folks!
Sincerely
Team COAP
