Popular Councillor to challenge his removal from the CVRD board
June 4th North Cowichan Council Meeting reminders
Hello Folks, here is a reminder of the council meeting at 5pm (sign in to speak no later than 4:45) Wed. the 4th of June 2025
Our previous Substack outlined the debate to be had tomorrow regarding the reversal of the ‘gas ban’ - aka reversing the accelerated step code North Cowichan put in place 5-6 years ahead of the province in 2023. Get the full low-down by reading our previous Substack HERE As well as instructions on how to attend virtually.
Cowichan Climate Hub will be there as a delegation fighting to keep the ban and the step code acceleration in place.
In addition to the motion above, Cllr Manhas has put forward one to reverse the decision made by council in 2023 to remove him from the CVRD board.
Cllr. Manhas was voted off the board by the council which WAS a majority before the last by-election. The reason given in the meeting where this happened was that the Mayor felt they would be more affective on the CVRD board as a unit that all voted the same - Unanimously.
So the 4-3 vote went in and this senior councillor was kicked off of his seat he previously held. (This seat also carries a remuneration package).
Cllr. Manhas won his council seat back on council in 2022 with the second highest vote count, and remains one of the most popular councillors to date. To have his voice removed from the CVRD board, which governs many decisions that affect our muni. not to mention the millions we pay them a year, was undemocratic - placing less popular council members on the board, and ignoring dissenting voices.
