In order to reach folks far and wide, we came at this whole project with a vision of taking a multilayered approach to meet our goals.
Along the campaign trail, we found that folks consumed information from many different sources, and if you left one source out, you missed a good portion of the community.
With my 12 year background in sales and print magazine work, it was in my plans to create a medium like a newspaper, that could reach beyond the digital landscape. So I sold the idea to Joseph, and now, after weeks of working on the business plan, we are ready to start the process of producing our first edition!
At the Westward Independent we will cover all you expect from us including; expose on tax expenditures, personal stories from locals we interview, in-depth articles on policies that affect your life and livelihood, get to the bottom of issues like the rise in crime, growth centres/15 min cities, CVRD OCPs, and so much more. No worries, we aren’t all business, we will add a little sprinkle here and there of humour/satire, and finish with a barter and trade classified section too!
We have some folks who have reached out to offer to help with proof reading, editing, and distribution.
The newsprint source has been obtained, and we will have the option to have some delivered to homes, as well as some dropped off for us to deliver to coffee shops and the like.
Westward Independent will start out as a monthly edition, with the goal to increase the quantities printed, as well as the frequency of editions as advertising and staff increase.
As we are working on content for COAP, we are also working on content for Westward Standard, and it has become a full time job. We hope to get the newspaper launched after we have retained the necessary ad revenue to pay for the printing.
Westward Independent will serve Ladysmith to Mill Bay.

And please pass along to any businesses you feel may also be interested in real, hard-hitting news about their community, as we can not do it without advertisers.
Sincerely,
Adrienne
